NOW KNOWN AS “RAIN SUMMIT WEST,” ANNUAL INDUSTRY EVENT WILL BE MONDAY APRIL 12 AT NAB SHOW

With RAIN Summit events last September in Philadelphia and coming up March 12 in Toronto (details here — registration details coming today), our flagship annual industry gathering in Las Vegas during the NAB Show has been re-christened RAIN Summit West.”

We’re happy to officially announce today that we’ll hold the Summit Monday April 12, and we’ll once again be at the Renaissance Las Vegas Hotel next door to the Convention Center.

We hope you’re able to join us for a day of engaging panel discussions, insightful and inspiring keynotes, and valuable and enjoyable networking and socializing at the near-legendary RAIN Cocktail Party. In the coming weeks, we’ll roll out the agenda and list of panels and speakers.

EXPERTS OFFER TAKES ON iPAD’S RELEVANCE FOR RADIO

So, does Jobs’s new iPad device mean something — anything — for radio and Internet radio?

It’s connected via Wi-Fi (and 3G on upper models), and it’s portable. But the OS doesn’t support Flash, and if you want to listen while you work on other things, iTunes is your only option. But what do the experts say?

Radio Survivor calls it “a tiny step forward.” Its 3G for “a very reasonable $30 a month without any contracts make it a great candidate for mobile Internet radio listening,” the blog reads. But battery life is still a question. “Apple specifies that you get 10 hours of active Wi-Fi use on a charge, no 3G battery life specs are published. With a much bigger battery than an iPhone one would expect that constant 3G use would go longer…” And there’s the lack of multi-tasking. “Unless Apple decides to add the ability to listen to live streams to the iPad’s iPod app — which is allowed to multitask with other apps — this is probably the biggest count against the radio capabilities of the iPad.”

Jacobs Media’s Paul Jacobs tells Tom Taylor for Radio-Info the new device “elevates the game” for radio, but doesn’t change it. In other words, the iPad won’t disrupt radio like the iPod and the iPhone changed music and cell phones. It’s yet another distribution method for content: “This device opens up a new category between the iPhone and desktops,” Jacobs said. And, the price is nice ($499-$829).

This device, in and of itself, isn’t bad or good for radio, explains Mark Ramsey in Hear 2.0. Rather, it’s the embodiment of the fact that radio, television, newspapers, and Internet are now all simply “media,” which all need to compete with each other. This machine, then, is simply another media platform. “When you are not radio anymore but are instead ‘all media,’ then what makes you unique from all other media becomes that much more decisive,” Ramsey concludes.

Finally, check out the latest entry in Kurt’s Blog. He suggests that the iPad’s lack of Flash support and multi-task capabilities don’t elevate it above the iPhone or iPod Touch in terms of radio listening. But, “keep in mind that, in the long run, everything gets better.” The iPad of the not-too-distant future will likely have all of these features and more!
