RAIN 2/10: Warner to music services: "Subscriptions, or no music!" ·Feb 10, 12:49 PM WARNER WANTS TO PULL THE PLUG ON FREE ON-DEMAND MUSIC SERVICESBBC News is reporting that Warner Music Group has said it plans to stop licensing music to “free music streaming services.”
The “free music services” referred to are, presumably, ad-supported “on-demand” streaming services like Spotify and Last.fm, and not non-interactive webcasting. What’s more, U.S. Copyright law established a compulsory license for the use of the music for non-interactive (e.g. Internet radio) purposes. The article quotes an unnamed Warner spokesperson as saying free-to-use ad-supported online music services are “clearly not positive for the industry,” and Warner CEO Edgar Bronfman Jr. as saying, “Free streaming services are clearly not net positive for the industry and as far as Warner Music is concerned will not be licensed.” The label wants to work exclusively with services that charge users a recurring subscription fee for on-demand listening. What remains to be seen is whether Warner will remove its music from existing services, or simply, going forward, reject new deals. Read more from BBC News here.
