RAIN 3/1: Internet radio listening returns to non-holiday norm in January Webcast Metrics ·Mar 1, 12:47 PM PANDORA, CBS RADIO AGAIN TAKE TOP SPOTS ON DOMESTIC CHARTPandora again dominantly held the #1 position in Ando Media’s January Webcast Metrics domestic-only rankings. The webcaster’s 257,281 Average Active Sessions (Daypart 6:00am to 12:00am, Monday through Sunday) dwarfed that of second-place CBS Radio, which had 146,148 AAS.However, Pandora’s listenership slightly decreased from 261,714 AAS in December 2009, perhaps due to “a return to pre-holiday streaming levels,” as Ando Media points out. Third-place Clear Channel also saw a decrease, though CBS Radio increased from 140,988 in December. Find the full domestic ranking below.
In the “All-Streams” ranking, CBS Radio was the top webcaster with 175,655 AAS (Daypart 6:00am to 12:00am, Monday through Sunday) which was up from 168,265 in December. This may perhaps be CBS Radio’s final month in the “All-Streams” chart as they blocked their streams to non-U.S. listeners in February (RAIN coverage here). Digitally Imported, Inc. held on to the #2 spot they took in December with a slight increase in listenership, while AccuRadio dropped from #6 to #8 — again probably due to a return to pre-holiday levels of listenership. U.S.-only webcasters, including Pandora and Clear Channel, are not included in the “All-Streams” chart. Ando Media will be hosting a web conference to discuss the January rankings on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 3:30pm (EST). You can register here. U.S. DISTRICT COURT: COPYRIGHT ROYALTY BOARD IS CONSTITUTIONALThe U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia has ruled that the Copyright Royalty Board is constitutional. The legitimacy of the CRB was challenged as early as May 2008, when Royalty Logic asserted that the three CRB judges were sitting in violation of the appointments clause (RAIN coverage here). Others, including Live365, have since taken up the challenge.
Last week, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled “that CRB judges are not ‘principal’ officers requiring Presidential appointment and Senate confirmation…barring an appeal, this decision removes the constitutional cloud over the CRB’s decisions with respect to webcaster royalty rates. Therefore, the recourse that Live365 and other webcasters who have not reached an agreement with copyright holders have is to try persuade the CRB to reevaluate the methods it has used in the past to calculate webcaster royalty rates,” according to Pillsbury Law (here). KATZ 360 REPORTS INCREASING AD SALES; OTHERS EXPAND INTO MOBILE PLATFORMSKatz 360 president Brian Benedik recently told Inside Radio that the firm has more digital revenue booked for 2010 than for all of 2009. “That surpassed even our expectations,” he said (here). “By bringing a little order to the world in the form of standardized currency and centralized ad insertion, we’ve been able to go out to the marketplace and really drive revenue into the channel.” Katz 360 is now focusing on selling “rich media,” such as pre-roll video ads.
Other webcasters and ad firms are also feeling confident about ad sales, especially when it comes to mobile platforms. Pandora’s VP of Audio Sales Doug Sterne recently announced they were delivering audio ads to mobile apps, Jennifer Lane reports (here), while TargetSpot recently launched their own mobile ad platform and added Slacker as their first mobile client (RAIN coverage here).
