RAIN 3/29: Great airfare, hotel deals still available for RAIN Summit West

Posted on: 03/29/2010

FLY FOR UNDER $400, STAY FOR $59 A NIGHT

If you’re contemplating journeying to Las Vegas for RAIN Summit West on April 12, there’s still plenty of cheap airfare and hotel rooms available. For example, the Riviera hotel has a great deal (we found it through TripAdvisor, but couldn’t save a URL directly to it). Other sites — including Orbitz, GetARoom.com, Hotels.com and Expedia — are offering rooms at the Riviera for around $59 a night. The Riviera’s proximity to the Summit is great: it’s located across the street from a Hilton, just north of the Convention Center and the Renaissance Hotel (where the RAIN Summit takes place).

If you’re a luxury traveler, the Four Seasons has rooms for “under $250.” You can find that deal from TripAdvisor here.

As for airfare, the Bing search engine is a great resource. For instance, searching for a Sunday, April 11 flight out of New York plus a return on Tuesday, April 13 (here) resulted in several one-stop options for under $400. We also hunted down some good deals from Priceline (here) and Southwest Airlines ($478 for New York LaGuardia to Las Vegas, leaving Sunday returning Tuesday). Found a better deal? Let us know by commenting on today’s issue!

RAIN Summit West takes place in the Renaissance Hotel in Las Vegas on April 12, 10am-7pm. It’s an official co-located event of the NAB Show and promises to be our best Summit yet! You can find out more about the Summit here, register here then RSVP on Facebook here.

NIELSEN: SMARTPHONES WILL OVERTAKE REGULAR CELL PHONES BY 2011

A recent Nielsen study found that in the last 6 months, smartphones’ share of overall cell phone sales reached 29% and 45% of survey respondents said their next mobile device will be a smartphone. This is just “the beginning of a groundswell,” says Nielsen. They conclude that smartphones will overtake regular cell phones by 2011. Inside Radio observes (here), “The data reinforces the importance of branded-apps that make it easy for smartphone owners to listen to their favorite stations on the go.”

NPR LISTENERS: 5% POSSIBLY GETTING iPAD, WOULD USE IT AROUND THE HOUSE

NPR has already prepared a “Flash-less” version of their site in preparation for iPad visitors (RAIN coverage here), and now has polled its listeners about the upcoming Apple device. They found that roughly 5% showed some inclination about buying the device in the next year, among which 78% said they planned to use the device for gathering news. Finally, a majority of listeners said they would use the iPad around the house (“living space / kitchen / bedroom”). NPR will use this info to optimize their site and iPad app. You can read more from NPR here.

HOUSTON SCHOOL DISTRICT LAUNCHING NET RADIO STATION, EXPECTS $1M YEARLY REVENUE

The Houston Chronicle reports that the Houston Independent School District is launching an Internet radio station and expects it to earn $1 million in annual revenue. K12RadioHouston will be run by HISD along with media company RFC, which will collect half of the station’s earnings. The Chronicle reports the station will feature music along with local school performances, athletic events and ads that target school families, students and employees. You can read more about K12RadioHouston here.

RESULTS FROM INFINITE DIAL 2010 STUDY TO BE REVEALED VIA WEBINAR

The results from Edison Research and Arbitron’s study, “The Infinite Dial 2010: Digital Platforms and the Future of Radio,” will be unveiled Thursday, April 8 through a free webinar. You can register for the hour-long webinar here. One of the findings of the study was that respondants were more willing to give up access to TV than to the Internet (RAIN coverage here). Edison Research’s Tom Webster will join RAIN in Las Vegas on April 12 for RAIN Summit West. Find out more about that event here and register here.
