RAIN 4/21: Rock listeners no strangers to streaming, smartphones and social media
AS IN MOST OTHER SEGMENTS, PANDORA AND FACEBOOK ADOPTION GROWING AMONG JACOBS RESPONDENTSThe preliminary results of Jacobs Media’s Tech Survey VI verify that rock radio listeners are taking to smartphones, social networking, and streaming radio (especially Pandora) as quickly and eagerly as nearly any other segment of the population.
Preliminary results of the study (in which more than 26-thousand listeners of 78 U.S. mainstream/active rock, classic rock, AAA, and alternative stations responded during mid-February to early March of this year) were revealed to AllAccess today. According to the study, of those who listen to radio online, 37% spend at least some time listening to Pandora (mostly AAA and alternative listeners), and most of those agree it’s better than AM/FM for finding new music. Jacobs digital director, Tim Davis, commented, “Our study also notes that about a quarter of Pandora listeners tune in on a mobile device signifying the importance of being wherever the audience is.”
Speaking of mobile devices, 3 in 10 own smartphones, and of the 80% of those who download apps, half have downloaded a radio app. Also, 80% of respondents have a social media profile (e.g. Facebook, MySpace, etc.), up 58% over last year. More than a third of those are fans of stations that participated in the study, and Twitter use has tripled since last year.

LISTENERS EARN POINTS FOR PRIZES BY LISTENING TO “RADIO LOYALTY” AFFILIATESJetcast and Lenco Mobile are launching a listener loyalty program in which a webcaster’s listeners earn points for tuning in, using apps, sharing via social media, and referring friends to the station.
The new program, unveiled at NAB, is called RadioLoyalty (here). A press announcement didn’t specify what exactly accumulated points will get a listener, except “goods and services” in the RadioLoyalty store, but the RadioLoyalty website says, “your listeners can redeem their RadioLoyalty points for real, valuable goods and services, including cash.” The press release is here and Radio 2020 has some analysis here.
ENGADGET REVIEWS NEW SQUEEZEBOX TOUCH: “THE MISSING LINK IN HOME ENTERTAINMENT”Engadget has posted an in-depth review of the new Squeezebox Touch Wi-Fi radio. The review includes a video walk-through of the user interface (here). “Build quality is predictably top-notch, audio quality is great, and compatibility with nearly any OS is killer,” Engadget concludes. “The Touch is another great addition in the Squeezebox series and, for many, the missing link in home entertainment system.” Find the full review here.
LIVE365 TOUTS PROMO POWER OF ARTIST-CENTRIC STREAMSStream hosting platform Live365 says the custom online stations it hosts for artists are helping those artists (or their estates) reach new audiences. Live365 hosts online stations for Roy Orbison, Frank Zappa, Pat Metheny, and Third Eye Blind, among others.
“For content owners and creators, setting up a custom radio station is rapidly becoming another powerful tool in the do-it-yourself marketing arsenal,” a Live365 press announcement reads. “Artists ranging from jazz great Pat Metheny to rockers Third Eye Blind and Santana have gained increased listeners through their radio stations powered by Live365. Even loved ones left to manage an artist’s estate have been setting up Internet stations as a way to work around the limited airplay slots available on terrestrial broadcast radio.”
