RAIN 5/7: New York Times spotlights growing inclusion of Net radio in car dashboards ·May 7, 10:57 AM NYT: “MAY BE CASE OF RADIO IS DEAD, LONG LIVE RADIO”Today’s issue of The New York Times includes an article on the growing presence of Internet radio in car dashboards, citing some industry experts who argue the transition may be gradual and a good opportunity for broadcast radio to re-establish itself as the “portable” entertainment choice.
Pandora’s CEO Joe Kennedy told The New York Times that “he thinks there will be a gradual migration in the car to services like Pandora, but he also says he believes it will not become a mainstream service until all new cars feature systems that can tap into apps.” Whether the adoption of Net radio is fast or slow, it shouldn’t be viewed as a threat to broadcast radio — argues Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media — but as an opportunity. “It’s a way for radio to get its portable mojo back,” Jacobs said. The article concludes (here), “For the first time, small local stations will be able to reach an entire driving nation, so some broadcasters may see their audiences swell The article also covers a few familiar in-car Net radio solutions that make listening to streaming radio in the car “no different than switching between 1010 WINS and Q104.3.” There’s the Alpine iDA-X305S Digital Media Receiver with Pandora Link (RAIN coverage here), the Pioneer AVIC X920BT (here) and of course Ford’s app-friendly Sync update (here). HANSON TO APPEAR AT RADIO INK CONVERGENCERadio Ink’s Convergence 2010 summit is fast approaching. The conference is set to take place June 3-4 in the Microsoft Silicon Valley Conference Center.
