RAIN 7/14: Schedule announced for Saturday's RAIN Summit Midwest
LINEUP FEATURES RADIO VETS DAHL, GEHRON; RESEARCHER KURTZMAN & MOREWe’re happy to announce today the full agenda for the first-ever RAIN Summit Midwest, coming up this Saturday afternoon, July 17, at the Conclave Learning Conference in Minneapolis.
Steve Dahl, Chicago broadcast legend-turned-podcaster, will keynote the Summit. Dahl (pictured below left) appeared as a panelist at RAIN Summit West earlier this year in what was perhaps the most well-received panel of the event, so his keynote in Minneapolis is sure to be a memorable experience.
RAIN Summit Midwest will also feature a presentation from Coleman Insight COO Warren Kurtzman (pictured), who will preview results from a new national research study, and veteran broadcast manager Kipper McGee (pictured ) will also deliver a presentation.
All times are subject to change, but here’s the basic game plan for Saturday afternoon’s event:
1:30pm: Welcome by RAIN publisher Kurt Hanson and journalist Michael Schmitt.
1:40pm: Presentation on “Taking Control of Your Future” by radio programmer and consultant Kipper McGee.
2:00pm: Panel on “New Media Tools and Techniques” moderated by Cox Media Group VP/Digital Gregg Lindahl.
2:40pm: Debut of a brand-new national research study by Coleman Insights president/COO Warren Kurtzman.
3:00pm: Networking break.
3:15pm: “State of the Industry Address” by RAIN publisher Kurt Hanson.
3:45pm: Panel on “Programming Your Station’s Stream” moderated by legendary radio executive and AccuRadio.com COO John Gehron and featuring, among others, Journal Broadcast Group’s head of radio programming Tom Land.
4:20pm: Keynote speech by Steve Dahl, addressing such topics as music radio’s online future, the likely future of FM radio, and opportunities for broadcasters in the world of podcasting.
4:55pm: Wrap-up by Hanson and Schmitt.
5:00pm: Everyone heads over to one of our famous RAIN Reader Cocktail Parties, tentatively scheduled for the Cooper Bar & Restaurant, one block south of the conference hotel (but watch for venue confirmation in RAIN on Friday).
RAIN Summit Midwest will be held at the Doubletree Park Place Hotel in Minneapolis at part of the Conclave Learning Center. (Register here.) RAIN Summit Midwest is being produced in association with the Conclave with sponsorship support from AllAccess.com and Coleman Insights.
MOBILE DRIVING AUDIENCE AND REVENUE FOR BROADCASTERS, WEBCASTERSMore than half of Slacker’s total sales come from smartphones, while over half of Pandora’s listenership now tunes in on mobile devices. That’s according to an article from Bloomberg Businessweek, which discusses radio’s mobile successes.
30 million users listen to Pandora on mobile devices out of the service’s 58 million total users. And that growth was achieved “only this year,” according to CEO Joe Kennedy.
Over at Slacker, about half of listenership comes from smartphones and they expect up to 75% of their total sales to come from users on mobile devices by the end of 2010. Senior VP Jonathan Sasse says mobile users are “more willing” to pay for a subscription to a service like Slacker. And if the fee for that subscription service is bundled into a wireless bill, users are 10 times more likely to subscribe, said Sasse.
As for monetizing mobile radio through ads, SNL Kagan predicts terrestrial radio will earn $1 billion from mobile ad sales and streaming to PCs by 2015 — up from $480 million last year.
At Clear Channel, mobile efforts have become “meaningfully profitable…a strategic necessity for us,” according to Evan Harrison, president of CC’s digital unit. Users’ average listening times on mobile devices is up, too. David Goodman, president of CBS Interactive, held similar sentiments: “There’s a tremendous amount of interest” in mobile ads, he said.
