MOBILE DRIVING AUDIENCE AND REVENUE FOR BROADCASTERS, WEBCASTERSMore than half of Slacker’s total sales come from smartphones, while over half of Pandora’s listenership now tunes in on mobile devices. That’s according to an article from Bloomberg Businessweek, which discusses radio’s mobile successes.
30 million users listen to Pandora on mobile devices out of the service’s 58 million total users. And that growth was achieved “only this year,” according to CEO Joe Kennedy. Over at Slacker, about half of listenership comes from smartphones and they expect up to 75% of their total sales to come from users on mobile devices by the end of 2010. Senior VP Jonathan Sasse says mobile users are “more willing” to pay for a subscription to a service like Slacker. And if the fee for that subscription service is bundled into a wireless bill, users are 10 times more likely to subscribe, said Sasse. As for monetizing mobile radio through ads, SNL Kagan predicts terrestrial radio will earn $1 billion from mobile ad sales and streaming to PCs by 2015 — up from $480 million last year. At Clear Channel, mobile efforts have become “meaningfully profitable…a strategic necessity for us,” according to Evan Harrison, president of CC’s digital unit. Users’ average listening times on mobile devices is up, too. David Goodman, president of CBS Interactive, held similar sentiments: “There’s a tremendous amount of interest” in mobile ads, he said.
