RAIN 7/21: Auto Magazine predicts "Wild West" of in-car radio ·Jul 21, 11:50 AM WEBCASTERS, AM/FM, SATELLITE WILL SOON “DUKE IT OUT” FOR DASHBOARD SUPREMACY, SAYS MAGAZINEFord’s move to include Pandora in their new in-dash Sync system is only the “opening of the floodgates for new companies and services looking to enter the already-crowded marketplace that is your car stereo,” writes Automobile Magazine.
Predicting that the next few years with be like “the Wild West” for radio companies in the car, the magazine notes that automakers may let “the contenders duke it out for themselves” rather than choosing sides — like they did for Sirius and XM. That’s because “there’s almost no new investment required” to integrate Internet radio. “Millions of drivers already pay for powerful mobile devices and data plans, and most new cars, even those as inexpensive as the Kia Forte, are set up to connect with them via Bluetooth and USB inputs.” Once car makers include such a way to connect a smartphone to the dashboard, any Internet radio app becomes a contender in the “Wild West” of in-car radio.
