New data point coming soon on Internet radio growth ·Feb 2, 11:16 AM For the past nine years, Arbitron and Edison Media Research have conducted a telephone survey each January looking at, among other things, Internet radio listening behavior. When you smooth the data, as I have, to take into account the margin of error of the study, the findings show a remarkably consistent pattern, as shown in the following chart: As you can see, past-week listening to Internet radio has grown consistently and inexorably during this decade, with the medium’s weekly cume increasing by almost 3 million people each year. Hopefully the 2009 interviews are now complete and we’ll see a update of this study from Arbitron and Edison sometime this spring. When we do, I think it’s reasonable to guess that we’ll see the slope of the line continuing its upward direction… if not increasing. In point of fact, I’d bet money that the slope will be increasing, as the trend will reflect, among other things, increasing consumer satisfaction with using the Internet a delivery method for entertainment media (e.g., TV shows on Hulu.com), plus the new phenomenon of Internet radio as an app on the iPhone (and iPod Touch).
